the crowd i don't see victims. >> romney and president obama both in ohio today. the real clear average of polls in the last 14 days. there are a bunch of polls in this average, including. >> have it up to ten points, some down to about three, four. this average is right at about five points. governor romney also bringing out some other people on the trail with him today. >> cannot aforfour more years of barack obama failed policy. we have need real recovery. >> things i'm baffled by is the existence of the skills gaffe, at the same time as we have this crazy unemployment. something is fundamentally disconnected. >> okay, the first guy we probably know if you are a golfer. jack nicklaus, golfing, second guy had to look twice. discovery channel "dirty jobs" host. steve hayes, "weekly standard." a.b. stoddarde, associate editor of hill. and kirsten powers from daily beast. she sat down and said i'll get all the e-mail. i'm in charles krauthammer's chair. yom kippur ends at sunset. >> the empty chair. >> left it in his honor. >> bret: what about today on his trail? ohio, the importance. >>

my policies, president obama and i both care about the middle class and the poor. that is not what people on the ground believe and i think that's attributed to the president's ad campaigns on the ground. i think it also is underscored by the 47% comments. but the other thing that was interesting here is in ohio, the president is leading mitt romney among women by 25 points. so, early on in the campaign all the talk we had about women's issues, the focus on women at the rnc and the dnc, that has clearly been a lasting problem for mitt romney, as well. a number from this poll, they asked who would be better on women's reproductive health issues, in ohio, the president led there by 29 points. so this has actually impacted quite significantly the campaign. >> if we take ohio as a microcosm for the country and say things have gone from not so great to pretty bad for romney in this month, month of september, two things jump out at me here about what's going on. number one is what crystal is talking about. poll numbers of middle class, working class voters saying we think romney favors t

talked about issues leaning to one of the least. >> cnn miami. >> as john mentioned, both president obama and mitt romney both say they are not for leg legalising marijuana. >> i spoke to barney frank. i said why do you care so much? >> i believe in personal freedom and liberty. i believe the efforts to shut down internet gamble. i think it contributes to a good deal of the sense of unfairness of young people that are told they shouldn't do this but then see older people engaging in things that have a greater impact on people. and then i think important at the federal level that means t cutting military spending and at the state level that means not doing as much as -- people that smoke marijuana. one of the best things we can do to reduce state expenditures is to stop going after people who use marijuana. >> you could also make money on it. very good point. the analogy is prohibition. we could tax it. again, it is the expensive. it is not family done. if you look at the arrests for marijuana. they come from minority groups and there are highly educated and upper income white kids that

, 47% disclosure they didn't want to disclose. let's listen. >> president obama and i both care about poor and middle class families. the difference is, my policies will make things better for them. we shouldn't measure compassion by how many people are on welfare. we should measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good paying job. >> who measures compassion by how many people are on welfare? who is the story man they're trying to argue with? >> they are trying to make a caricature out of president obama calling him the food stamp president. this reminds me of the story where the woman comes home, finds her husband in bed with his best friend and he says, honey, it's not as bad as it looks. you have the 47 -- >> is that a joke or true life story? >> i'm sure it's happened once or twice. you have the 47% remark with romney speaking and other people have said it, not just me, with complete conviction and passion, telling people what he really thinks. and then you have this guy sitting in front of a camera, reading a script. you have to ask, okay, do th

to the highest office in this country. president obama and mitt romney both spoke at the cgi today and former president clinton stole the show at the democratic national convention. he had some tough advice for the republican candidate. mitt romney today came out with this line which was -- went down very well with the audience as you would expect. >> if there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from bill clinton can do a man a lot of good. >> what words would you have for mitt romney, given the state of the election campaign right now? >> well, i think, you know, the debates are very important for him. >> crucial? >> i think so. and i think if he's going to double down on that 47% remark, that will cause difficulties because we now know that the overwhelming number of those people work and have children, and the reason they don't pay federal income taxes is their median income is as low as it was in 1995 now, and until the current election season, republicans and democrats supported both the child tax credit and the earned income tax credit.

to happen >> that was a clear nod to the president clinton's speech praising the president. both brawny and president obama were talking about foreign policy today in new york. >> president obama is urging fellow leaders to take a stand against violence in the moslem world >> i do believe it is the obligation of all leaders in all countries to speak out forcefully against violence and extremism >> president obama condemned the anti islamic film sparking protest overseas but said that nothing justifies mindless violence. the president also had a message for iran. >> make no mistake, it is not a challenge that can be contained. it would threaten the elimination of israel and the security of gulf nations and the stability of the global economy >> after the address he headed across town to speak at former president clinton's gathering. that is where mitt romney began his day, joking about the perks of an introduction from the popular former president >> if there is one thing we have learned, by the way, it is that a few words from bill clinton can do a man of lot of good >> bromley also too

needs to do something to catch president obama in key toss-up states including ohio where both candidates are campaigning today. in the latest "the new york times"/quinnipiac poll has the president up ten points in the buckeye ste. heashiton " h hi b eight. the president pulled ahead in florida and pennsylvania, as well. drastic times call for drastic measures. the romneyampaign is out with a new ad and just mney and the came camera. >> president obama and i both mi.e abo poor and mdlelass diens policies will make things better for them. >> but that is a tough sell with middle class voters who believe romney's economic policies only benefit the rich. is it time for romney 4.0? so, i dughi quinnipiac poll and a few things that were interesting and struck me. first of all, there's so many people have said this election is about the economy. and it is about the economy. but i would put a finer truth comb on that. i think it's about the future of middle class and going back t those nbers tha wusad in the quinnipiac poll, they asked people, who's -- obama and romney, who are they

as big a player in the presidential campaign than mr. bill clinton, bubba? well, both president obama and mitt romney spoke at the clion global initiativup inew york today anthat's ahead. ey're all genuflecting to the big guy, elvis. he's back. watching "hardball," the place for politics. >>> welcome back to "hardball. eada tli e thrghoud an global initiative up in new york, bill clinton is the man to see. he's so influential mitt romney took time away from the campaign trail to attend the meeting up there today. president obama, too, praised the former president. let's listen to president obama. ieip y f your extraordinary leadership, and i think i speak for the entire country when we say that you continue to be a great treasure for all of us. >>while r bill clinton mean for the 2012 election looking ahead for six weeks and beyond? john heilemann is new york magazine national affairs editor and an msnbc contributor. and i must give you congratulations, john. i was outherwithou, u maalrin e bo thicupour, count them, four emmys this weekend, this sunday night. we all watched. it must b

it because that add news people and has an impact. i have seen both obama and romney suddenly tweaked or change language, or drop language that were called out by fact checkers because ultimately there was a decision that are that it doesn't really mean that much to us if we fix this. it will get less greece if we just tweak it a bit or change it on the margins. but the key thing that moves voters such as he apologizes for america, or obama with a ridiculous thing about the savings from the wars, which he says, and the same breath criticizes george w. bush for running wars on the credit card, he will say those like almost 1 cents after another without any since he is contradicting himself. there is polling there that says that's an effective line. it moves voters eric so it doesn't matter what the actual facts are. so that's, that's when -- >> i think fact checkers come to this with their own sets of thoughts and ideas and backgrounds. and any since he is trying to redefine what a fact is. pretty saying there are no objective facts, that it's just someone else's opinion about what we

million more are on food stamps. president obama and i both ce about poor and middle-class families. the difference is, my policies will make thin better for em. ul mre compassion by how many people are on welfare. we should measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good paying job. my plan will create 12 million new jobs over the next four years. piifams poverty and strengthening the middle class. i'm mitt romney, and i approve this message, because we can't afford another four years like the last four years. >> we don't usually play whole ads but this one makes it very clear, karen, that this ishe kindf ad t youee f candidates who are really in trouble and trying to reconnect to voters and he clearly knows that he has a problem on that connection, that personal connection. >> yes. if he hadn't entitled his book "no apologies" there might be an apology in tha ad forhose t ret he has a problem with an ad like this in a place like ohio, is that it is a state that has, in fact, seen some economic growth and it's doing better than a lot of the country

toss upstate, president obama and governor romney both campaigning in the same battleground state today. we'll take you straight to ohio and talk about the strategies there, plus violent protests in two european capitols. latest fall outs from efforts to slash out of control government spending. what the street battles you're seeing across the pond there mean for our economic future. and finding justice for an american couple murdered in a tropical paradise. it's all happening now. and back to the big story of the day, iranian mahmoud ahmadinejad getting set to address the u.n. general assembly. hello, everyone, i'm arthe arthel nevel in for jenna lee. jon: i'm jon scott. mahmoud ahmadinejad delivering what is expected to be his final speech to the u.n. as president of the islamic republic. this caps a week of belligerent receipt particular. on tuesday he called for a new world order, free from what he calls american bullying. all this has governor mitt romney and the republican national committee hit the president hard on foreign policy, releasing a scathing attack being the president'

in the cut line that both romney and president obama addressed the conference, but avoided directly attacking each other. more from the papers and the speeches, but we want to hear from you now. angelica, republican line. caller: i am in full support of president obama. i like the way he handles foreign policy, he is measured and careful of what he says. when i look at mr. romney, i am so sick and tired of the fear and warmongering and am afraid that he would start another military conflict in the middle east. as a voter, on that topic alone, president obama has my vote, because i do not believe that we and the world can afford another military conflict on this planet. thank you for allowing me to talk this morning. have a good day. host: thank you for your comments this morning. round rock, texas. caller: i agree with the republican that just called in, i also support the president as far as foreign affairs go. mr. romney used to belong to a chinese organization, it was an oil conglomerate. they were supporting iran. in 2011, mr. romney separated himself from these chinese oil conglomerate.

for the white house zeros in on ohio. >> both president obama and mitt romney will be in the same state at the same time. >> no republican has won the white house without winning the buckeye state. >> o.h. >> o.h. works every time. >> iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad addresses the united nations today as he and his regime face ever increasing international pressure. >> israel believes you want to destroy them. you said you want to drive them from the face of the earth. >> football fans are fuming over that botched call by replacement refs. the upheld that call. >> yeah. some are calling it the worse call in the nfl history since d to play at the super bowl. >> worst touchdown ever. hail the size of tennis balls. >> the paddle boat race that teams are still talking about. >> how about a car without a driver. governor jerry brown instituted safety regulations for self-driving car. >> it came courtesy. >> is he frugal or cheap? >> cheap. >> wow. >> all that matters. >> seattle seahawks were robbed of a win. >> the packers got the win. >> i didn't watch the game. >> thank you very muc

seemingly joining in calls for the regular nfl referees to get back on the job. even president obama tweeting nfl fans on both sides of the aisle hope the ref lockout is subtle scent. that was a very, very sort of non-partisan, postcards and comment, but you think? in wisconsin governor scott walker even jumping into the union battle after catching a few hours of sleep. the packers game is just as painful. return the the real refs who are real union. it is a rare day whenee on something and an even rare day when they agree with thel lh said, they have to fire nfl replacement arrives because they were not good enoughor. up next ralph nader offering a scathing criticism of president obama. it's about that time. forty days out from the election. somehow he thinks -- well, will tell you about that. the key for sorting all this out and much more. we are joined by, oh, yes. we will be talking a long, politics, foreign policy and, of course, a presidential race between president obama and governor romney. it is getting better all the time. stay with us. >> third world dictators behave like

by the pacrs was ruled a touchdown by the seahawks. president obama tweeted. nfl fans on both sides hope that the lockout is settled soon, and governor scott brown says after catching a few hours of sleep, the packers game is still just as painful. return the refs. vice presidential paul ryan had to come in and nuke the kumbaya moment. >> it is time to get the real refs and you know what, it reminds me of president obama and the economy. if you can't get it right it's time to get out. >> all right. well, other than that, if we all agree, what is the hold-up? mitch albom is "outfront" tonight. he's author of "the time keeper." number one fiction on "the new york times" best-seller list. mitch, great to see you. it's obviously been reported two sides are meeting today. what are the odds that this is going to get settled? >> not so great. they are actually still pretty far apart. you would wonder why a league that makes $9 billion in revenue is worried about maybe about $10 million apart on a package for the referees, but it's a bit of a power struggle going on and those on the inside say e

of muscling on both sides. i think it affected his relationship with barack obama for the first few years of his presidency, but i think now that they've sorted things out between themselves and i think he said, look, he loves being center stage. the clinton global initiative is huge. it's attended by almost as many world leaders as the u.n. general assembly. you have a guy who really isn't president but for all intents and purposes is a very influential world leader. somebody said to me, who needs who more? does barack obama need bill clinton more or does bill clinton need barack obama more? i think they need each other. bill clinton, the inflew enser. i think for barack obama there's no more effective, articulate defender of his right to be re-elected right now than bill clinton. >> okay. >> so along the same lines is a new poll, quinnipiac, "new york times" poll that shows mr. obama is up by 10 points in the state of ohio over mitt romney. is that for the efforts of obama's great campaigning or does it have more to do with bill clinton and that widely admired speech he gave at the dnc?

.j. lang got fed by the refs. even president obama tweeted. nfl fans on both sides of the aisle hope the revs lockout is settled soon. this is after a disputed field goal gave the baltimore ravens a one point win over the new england patriots and a series of botched calls and misapplied rules that have driven coaches, players, and fans crazy. all this because of a labor dispute between the nfl and its regular referees that began when the league locked out the refs in june. >> reporter: the referees want more money asking more than the nfl's offer to increase the salaries from $149,000 a year to $189,000. compare that to the median nfl players salary, $770,000 a year. it's important to remember the average nfl playing career is only 3.5 years and most of the refs have other careers so these aren'tful-time jobs for them. >> reporter: the nfl wants to make the refs full time and to add more refs so the average referee would make less money. they want to move them to from a pension system to a 401k. but in the context of a business that brings in $9.5 billion a year, seems solvable. red

and the battle for the buckeye state. president obama, mitt romney both campaigning there today. look at the poll from cbs and the "new york times." >> showing in ohio now the president has a 10-point lead over mitt romney among likely voters. 53% to 45%. that number's going to jump off the screen for a lot of people in this country. ohio, 18 electoral votes, seventh highest in the nation and again no republican has ever won the white house without winning that number. >> how many times have we said that? >> say it every time. >> jim acosta has that stitched into his t-shirts. hi, jim. traveling with mitt romney from ohio. >> reporter: that's how that. good morning. i think mitt romney has also heard that once or twice. thanks to john berman for bringing that up again. rolling up on a mitt romney event getting started in a few moments in westerville, ohio, outside of columbus. mitt romney goes then up to the northern part of the state, hit the cleveland area and toledo later on this evening. we tried to talk to mitt romney about the struggles he's having here in ohio before the poll came out this

it is. other elements added as allowing obama to hold both among those women. that also shapes the issue makes -- mix. >> immigration is not an issue that is a core based republican conservative issue. there is a sizable minority group within the party who cares deeply about it. why has it become the position of the party when in fact it is a huge ingrowing motor block for whom it is an important issue. >> we might have different views about this. when it is framed, all that matters is are you going to build a fence? i also think it is about how are these things represented. and what you obligated to say when you're pinned down. do you believe that enforcing these laws that seems problematic? the idea the dream act is that these are the good kids. it does not mean you're a bad kid if you're not in a community college or to got in trouble when you were a teenager. there's something very disingenuous about the debate we have a round this book that is because advocates want to structure the debate in a certain way. i do think that advocates have structure of the conversation very ostentatio

. the president had something to say, too, watch your screen, barack obama tweeting, quote, nfl fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon. and he calls the call terrible. >> join the group of people across the country saying that. all right, eight minutes past the hour. police in suburban seattle now say they are investigating. look at this, folks. this incident. it was caught on dash cam. those are two brothers down on the ground, getting punched by several officers. they say the cops beat them for no reason, and they filed a complaint. the brothers told affiliate kiro jail officials initially turned the officers away instructing them to take the brothers to the hospital, instead, because of their injuries. they say the officers washed off their faces, drove them around for hours, to reduce the swelling, then took them back to jail, where they were finally booked. tukwila police say they won't comment until their investigation is complete. >>> congressman todd akin is not dropping out of the missouri senate race despite intense pressure to do so in the wake of his con

relations. welcome to you both. starting with you, richard haas, let's take an overview. is the obama foreign policy defendable four years later? >> for sure it's defendable. it's not to say it's flawless. but he can point to obviously the killing of osama bin laden. he can point to, among other things, the attempt to improve relations with china and russia. obviously he's got the uwe united states out of iraq. the united states after going up has now come down to some extent in afghanistan. the middle east, even though it's turbulent, is more open than it was. so i think the president in general can point to some areas where he moved forward and some areas obviously his critics will say where he movedded back. all in all it's a defense i believe and defendable record. >> ifill: i want to walk through some of that piece by piece. referencing the president's speech today, he turned over a big chunk of it to talking about the difference between railing against or speaking out against violence... violent extremism versus protecting free speech. why was so much devoted to that topic? >> g

from the u.n. stage, the president and mrs. obama targetedded female voters in a tapedded appearance on abc's "the view." they both focused again on what is best to revive the economy. >> we grow fastest when the middle class is doing well and when folks who are trying to get in the middle class have ladders of opportunity. that's a different vision about how we move the country forward. ultimately it will be up to the american people to make a decision about who has got the better plan. >> i'm voting for him. reporter: this morning republican mitt romney was welcomedded warmly at the clinton global initiative. the former president praised him for supporting the americorps program. >> governor, i thank you for being here. the podium is yours. >> thank you, mr. president. reporter: romney returned the compliment with a joking reference to clinton's speech nominating president obama at the democratic convention. >> if there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from bill clinton can do a man a lot of good. all i got to do now is wait a co

in the middle east. both candidates want to sanction china because of the threat of war. i think president obama has the advantage going into the debate. the president's record is very solid. mitt romney has to develop some well considered ideas -- here's what i would do on the big issues. how we can stop iran from becoming a nuclear weapons power. how do we bring peace to the palestinians? that is a debate we should have. it should not be partisan. i am looking for to the debates. host: nicholas burns, former u.s. ambassador and now teaching at the harvard. thank you for joining us this morning. guest: thank you very much. >> tomorrow morning's washington journal, the head of the aerospace association on the aerospace association on the automatic spendi
